Mary Lou West's Professional Interests
- The July, 2002 workshop on computational physics at Lawrence University
in Appleton, Wisconsin was terrific and I learned a lot.
The participants and the director, David Cook, were a congenial group.
- The interstellar medium, especially the local cavity around the sun
- Variable stars
- Astronomy education. The NASA IDEAS
Program funded my workshop
for teachers in July 1998-July 1999. It was designed to introduce hands-on,
minds-on astronomy activities to 20 teachers (4-8th grade) and 3 pre-service
teachers. We had a lot of fun! We found lots of interesting Internet links
to astronomy resources
.
- Activities I have written include
Internet exercise,
H-R diagram,
Ex 6: Galaxies
- "Discovering Extrasolar Planets" (a popular astronomy talk)
(See Geoff Marcy's page at http://exoplanets.org
) A NASA artist painted the transiting planet HD 209458.
I presented this talk at the
Rockland Astronomy Club
in February, 2003, where Evan helped out.
- "A
Woman's Place is in the Dome: a history of women's contributions to
astronomy." (a popular astronomy talk)
- "The Active Sun" (a popular astronomy talk)
- "SETI" (a popular astronomy talk)
- How Objects Move in Outer Space" (a popular astronomy talk)
- Our amateur astronomy club is the
North Jersey Astronomical Group ,
part of the United
Astronomy Clubs of New Jersey . We investigated the antique telescopes
http://www.webari.com/musoc
at the NJ School of Conservation.
- Computer competency training, including
webmaking ,
and having students make webpages
- Proposed EdD in Science Education
