MONTCLAIR STATE UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES
Applications are invited for three tenure-track positions in Mathematics Education. The department seeks candidates with research interests in the areas of: the teaching and learning of mathematics, the role of technology in mathematics education, the impact of professional development on the achievement of students, and interdisciplinary approaches to mathematics education. In particular we invite applications for
- Associate/Full Professor (V# F30): The candidate will support existing departmental Mathematics Education programs at the undergraduate and graduate level. In particular the candidate will teach courses and mentor students in the existing EdD in Pedagogy with a Specialization in Mathematics Education and provide leadership in the development of PhD in Mathematics Education, The successful candidate will provide leadership in the development of a Center in Mathematics Education. Evidence of a strong record of scholarly publication and research, of success obtaining extramural funding, of involvement with professional organizations, of teaching excellence and a record of progressively responsible leadership experiences, especially in the development of new graduate courses and programs in mathematics education should be presented. Preferred qualifications include successful teaching at the 6 - 12 level.
- Assistant Professor (V# F29): The candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in mathematics education, mentor master's candidates and become involved in the pursuit of external funding, professional development activities and the development and revision of courses. Evidence of a developing record of scholarly publications and research and evidence of teaching excellence should be presented. Preferred qualifications include successful teaching at the K - 12 level, especially at the middle school level.
Starting date is September 1, 2006. Candidates are required to have a doctorate in Mathematics Education with background in Mathematics at the Masters level; or Doctorate Mathematics with significant work experience in mathematics education. Faculty members support undergraduate and graduate students seeking their initial certification to teach school mathematics, graduate students in the MS Mathematics with a concentration in mathematics education, and in the MA and post-baccalaureate certificate in Teaching Middle Grades Mathematics. Faculty members are expected to teach courses in mathematics including some taken by math majors. Applicants must have a strong commitment to quality teaching in a broad range of courses at the undergraduate level and to a more specialized set of graduate courses.
The Department of Mathematical Sciences at Montclair State University includes undergraduate programs in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, and Physics; Master's programs in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, and Statistics and an Ed.D. in Pedagogy with a Specialization in Mathematics Education. There are twenty-nine full-time faculty in the department. Montclair State University is the second largest public university in New Jersey and is located 15 miles west of New York City in close proximity to major pharmaceutical, financial, and research centers.
