CHEM 230

Required Materials: Textbook is the latest edition of Organic Chemistry, by John McMurry, which must include the "Spartan View" and "Organic Chemistry Online" CD. Also recommened are the study guide and solutions manual to accompany this text, and a set of molecular models. All items are available in the University bookstore, and elsewhere.

Supplementary Course Materials: The Chemistry Computer Lab is available for student use. Twelve PC's are available with chemstry-related software, including ChemDraw, HyperChem, Spartan, Gaussion, ChemSite, JUMP, and many others.

Course Requirements:

three or four X 100 point exams
one X 100 or 200 point cumulative final exam
Various graded homework assignments may be added

Course Content:

In McMurry's latest edition, complete coverage of the following chapters: (Numbers refer to chapters)

1. Structure and bonding
2. Polar Bonds and their Consequences
3. Organic Compounds: Alkanes and cycloalkanes
4. Stereochemistry of alkanes and cycloalkanes
5. Overview of organic reactions
6. Alkenes I-structure and general reactivity
7. Alkenes II- reactions and synthesis
8. Akynes: an introduction to organic synthesis
9. Stereochemistry
12. Spectroscopy- MS and IR
13. NMR
10. Alkyl halides
11. Reactions of alkyl halides: SN and E mechanisms
14. Conjugated Dienes and UV Spectroscopy
