DEPARTMENT OF

Combined BS/MS in Chemistry

The Program

The combined BS-MS program requires a minimum of 138 credits; 112 credits from the undergraduate program and 26 credits from the graduate program.  This program has more chemistry. mathematics and research requirements than the undergraduate and graduate degrees separately.  The undergraduate component includes all the requirements for certification of the BS degree by the American Chemical Society Committee on Professional Training.  If pursued independently, these two degrees require a total of 152 credits and would take an average of six years to complete.  The 14 credit difference between the combined program and the two independent degrees reflects the substitution of undergraduate free electives with graduate course and the substitution of graduate electives with 400 level undergraduate courses.

Students who complete the program will be awarded both degrees at the end of five years.  A student who decides not to complete the program can graduate with a bachelor’s degree by completing the requirements for the BS in Chemistry.

Eligibility

Undergraduate chemistry majors with a minimum GPA of 3.0 in chemistry at the end of their junior year (or completing Physical Chemistry II (CHEM-341) are eligible for the combined program.  Students should have taken at least three 300 level chemistry courses, including CHEM 341 at Montclair State University.  The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is not required.  Students who have completed a BS in Chemistry are not eligible for this program.

Research Requirements

The total research requirement of 6 s.h. is spread over the last four semesters of the program (1 s.h. of CHEM 499 and 5 s.h. of CHEM 595).
