Research Interests

The goal of my research is to investigate the mechanisms for infection of Alphaviruses, Sindbis (SIN) and Ft. Morgan (FMV), in cultured cells and to analyze the effects of the sequence diversion on receptor binding. Objectives for this project are:

To analyze the mechanisms and pathway for virus attachment, penetration, cytopathogenicity, and cell-to-cell spread of SIN and FMV:

  • To analyze and compare the mechanism(s) of endocytosis of FMV in Vero cells and SIN in BHK cells.
  • To study the induction of apoptosis by FMV in Vero cells and SIN in BHK cells.
  • To study the involvement of survival signaling pathways in Alphavirus-induced apoptosis.

I am also interested in factors that contribute to the success and retention of students in science programs and increasing the participation of underrepresented minorities in research and science careers.
