The Department of Biology and Molecular Biology at Montclair State University is an exciting place to be.  The department offers a variety of degree programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels.  Department faculty have a broad spectrum of research interests and work closely with students in both the laboratory and field.  The department is housed in Science Hall, a state-of-the-art research and teaching facility constructed in 1999.

Academic ProgramsWe provide two undergraduate majors within the department, traditional Biology (BS) and Molecular Biology (BS).  Within the Biology BS are elective concentrations in Environmental Science and in Biology Education.  At the graduate level, we provide a MS in Biology and a MS in Molecular Biology, and offer concentrations in Ecology and Evolution, Physiology, and Science Pedagogy.  We also offer a graduate certificate program in Molecular Biology.

Mission StatementIn reflection of the larger mission of Montclair State University and the College of Science and Mathematics, the Department of Biology and Molecular Biology strives to foster in developing life scientists the ability to critically examine information and discover new knowledge through rigorous scientific reasoning.  Through research and writing intensive experiences in the classroom and laboratory, students of the biological sciences develop the practical and intellectual skills to succeed in rewarding careers and become productive members of society.  The Department of Biology and Molecular Biology offers general education courses and multiple major degree programs and concentrations at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.  These programs are designed and implemented to promote educational equity and academic excellence through close interactions between faculty and students in the classroom, the research laboratory and in the field.  As with the larger mission of the University and College, the Department of Biology and Molecular Biology seeks to develop and support appropriate activities and programs serving the best interests of the region.
