2009 is the International Year of Astronomy, celebrating the 400 years since Galileo looked at the sky through a telescope. (And it has changed everything!) One goal is to have 10 million children in the world look through a telescope next year. Amateur astronomy clubs such as NJAG are gearing up for lots of star parties. One of the 11 cornerstone projects is the Galileoscope. It is a small but high quality telescope kit which can used as an optics experiment also. If the IYA2009 committee gets lots of pre-orders before June 30, 2008, the price will drop to about $10. The specs and a pre-order form are here in MS Word , or as Adobe pdf format. You can read the June, 2008 paper "Progress on Creating the Galileoscope for the International Year of Astronomy 2009" by Pompea, Fienberg, Arion, Smith, and Isbell.

The 29th Annual Sigma Xi Student Research Conference was on Saturday, May 6, 2006. The program was exciting and we had a great time learning about all the neat research projects MSU students were doing. Here are the programs for previous years.

Public Telescope Nights will be 8-9 PM on clear Thursdays, September 4 to December 11, 2008 (exept November 27).

Our summer STARGAZING PARTY will be Friday July 25, 2007, 9-11 PM, at Riker Hill Art Park in Livingston. This was in cooperation with the Dreyfuss Planetarium of the Newark Museum. We observed the moon, Jupiter, Saturn, the Ring Nebula, M13, double stars, etc.

At MSU we use our Meade 12 inch LX200 GPS telescope (photo by Mike Peters). We also use our older trusty Questar 7 (photo by Bob Dorner).

Public Telescope Nights are supported by our astronomy club, the North Jersey Astronomical Group.

My husband was recently featured in the online magazine Eldercountry ( http://www.eldercountry.com ).

Sigma Xi egg drop in May, 1999 was fun!

Carolyn Shoemaker is a famous comet hunter. I'm flattered that some people think I look like her! (She is the one on the left in red.)

Here are some pictures of my aunt and uncle, Peg and Paul Gilbert, of Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin.
